The cable and a computer running CHIRP makes it so much easier. Once you get the radio set up, you can save the settings and share them. If you know someone who has settings you want, you can easily import it into your settings.
Got it setup using the Radiocity software. Unfortunately, this radio doesn't support CHIRP :/

    Solid!

My understanding of GMRS is that it's essentially an ever so slightly more high powered walkie talkie, but still has strong limitations of (more or less) line of sight.

I looked at repeaters, but I don't have any near me that would be accessible by GMRS. HAM, maybe, GMRS, not at

I can hit a repeater 27mi from my house.

I bought several programing cords and never could get them to work. I found the tidradio bluetooth programmer($20) that works great and you program your radios with an app on your phone. I have several Uv5rs all programed.
Not sure what radios you got but it works on many different makes and models.

I have a pair of the UV15Pro that I set up and messed with last year. The goal was to be able to simplex over to P.Allen from BR. I could hit the repeater in BR but my buddy couldn’t.

Last week, I ordered a mobile transceiver and plan to make a geaux-box for comms. It’s a work in progress and I’m learning as I go.

If I can go to my buddies house and hit the repeater, we’ll build one for him and see if we can get to Road Kill and talk to another friend in Conroe.

Oh, didn’t say it but we could not talk on simplex with the whips on the HT. Plan to upgrade the antennas on both ends and try again this summer.

Wouxun KGXS20G, DC power supply, 18Ah LiPO4 battery, Midland MXTA25 antenna, a multitude of connectors (I’m envisioning a pigtail connector for various power supplies-onboard battery, car battery, Power supply, DC cig lighter),
    In-line Power monitor.

Going to try and get it in an Apache 3800 box. I don’t plan to have any ports in the box. When I want to use it, I’ll open it and set up.

As I mentioned this is a work in progress. I plan to give the radio, DC power supply and antenna a test next week but it’ll prob be June before I get the first rev of the box built. Goal is to be ready for the fifth season (aka hurricane).

I should be off tomorrow and can take some pictures. Decided to keep it loose and use the box just to keep things together.
    Awesome!

I keep toying with getting a GMRS Pro since it can Bluetooth to a phone and what not, but for the same price I can also buy a badass antenna setup....sooo....yeah LOL

I did buy a folding antenna that extends 3ft and have been able to hit repeaters (finally!) - it's just kinda floppy in the wind. I'm going on a ~4 day hike in June and am going to see what I can hit from the peaks with it.

With work and all I decided to just use the case to keep it all together and not necessarily have the partitions. I have a Wouxun KG-XS20G with an 18 Ah battery. Also in the box is a 12A power supply if I want to plug it in. Currently have a Midland MXTA12 mag base and a MXTA25 ghost antenna on my truck but that usually stays in the box too.

In the pics, you can see that it can run off a power bank (using the power supply to provide 12V) or even the 18v to 12v transformer on a Ryobi battery.

It’s a deep rabbit hole. I’m looking at a Comet 712-efc. My ultimate goal is to be able to talk on simplex to my buddy across the River.

bringing this back from Necro state,
I had visited meshtastic a few years ago, at least 3. At that time, there were 2 boards available.. both were offered in 900 and 430.
I had gotten 3 and flashed them to be able to send a simple text from a phone to the board, over the lora mesh to a second board then each board was bluetooth tethered to a phone..
    .
Fast forward till tonight when I had time to revisit meshtastic website.. Holy crap it has matured..
They now have several boards and Json interpreters that send info across internet connected nodes ..
There is a well thought out bandplan and use agreement .. for interoperability..

My firmware was so old, it didnt work with anything but themselves at this point and was not even listed as a legacy item.

I not only was able to flash my old boards, but had a few lora boards I had used to chase weather baloons from mysongy and I repurposed them as trackers too ..

I have a gateway board up in destrehan, broadcasting in 900 on the default channel and default encryption but its an open key for anyone to use.. If someone wants to see if they see me, I have an antenna about 30 ft up and lmr400 running to it..

If you see it, you will see a ham call as well..

I will be doing the same with my 440 card eventually.
