What about using chemicals to strip it?
I sprayed my stock with a Spray Can stripper and got it down to bare wood no problem. Sat it by my fireplace to dry and get any residual cosmoline out.

I believe you've got an acute case of Mosin-itis. It happenens when you come into direct contact with cosmoline, and whenever someone mentions buying a Mosin it sounds like the best idea you've heard... Sucks when the ATF makes me wait everytime I try to buy a gun.
