Your right his property his problem. I should calm down my extra chromosome might be XYY with this pent up aggression. Still hate people who kill animals for no reason. Don't really give a **** about the word stigmata. But I already claimed to be ignorant so that might just reaffirm it. It won't be the first time I have inserted my foot in my mouth. This thread is just making me want to be a veterinarian more and more.

I think they have taken issue with the fact that you claimed it was a harmless animal. Just because it was non-venomous does not mean it was harmless. As mentioned before the bacteria and risk of infection from a bite, much less the emotional stress it would put on a child is not worth chancing IMO.

fair enough, but at this point I don't think you're going to be able to save that snake...

He obviously felt like he HAD reason, which makes this nothing more than a difference of opinion, which I think we've actually had on here once before...

Agreed. Sorry for the outburst SigArm I don't have children and it is impossible to factor fictitious ones into the equation. I didn't mean to come off as an ******* but I assuredly did. Equanimity is something I have been told I need to work on and it is outbursts like these that reaffirm that point. This won't be the last time I will end up apologizing on this forum that is for sure.

Its amazing all the myths flying around about snakes even water snakes. I can even count the times I have been bit by water snakes and have never got an infection. People look for any type of excuse to justify killing a snake harmless or not.

I have driven my truck alot of times. Never been in a serious wreck (where someone even got a cut or a bruise) BUT, I still put my seat belt on, because the possibility is there.

There are lots of things that you do because there is a SLIGHT chance that serious harm may come to you when something happens.

Do you keep up with your tetanus shots? Why? There is only a SLIGHT chance that you could get tetanus when you cut yourself. You where an orange vest when you go hunting? Keep a life jacket in the boat? Lock your doors?

There are millions of safety precautions because some events can cause serious injury, and while it may only be a low chance, the effects if you are not prepared are serious enough to not gamble on. No, not ever water snake is going to cause an infectious bite. Probably not 10 water snakes, but that 11th one might. And it could be worse to a child with a weaker immune system....and lets not forget the emotional trauma. I can still remember an event that happened with a snake over 20 years ago, because it very well could have cost me my life. (I do not have nightmares or anything about it, and I normally only think about it when discussing snakes, and not always then, but it is there)

You mentioned those as precautions. Your statement
"While a bite will only kill you if you do not seek medical assistance within the following month or something"

Not to mention you said they reach lengths of 8 feet is ridiculous.

Apology accepted. I was actually more amused by your reaction than offended by it. However, I think that you would indeed be well served in the future if you gave it a second thought before you went around making assumptions and throwing around accusations about people you don't even know, especially in a public forum. In this particular case, I can assure you, your assumptions about me are far from correct. In fact, you might be interested to know that my dad actually was that which you aspire to become, a veterinarian, and I spent my entire youth working alongside him and with animals of all sorts. I have probably rehabilitated and nursed back to health more wildlife and exotic animals in my lifetime than most non-outdoors types have even seen. I also have been a responsible law abiding hunter and fisherman in this state for over 40 years thus spending thousands upon thousands of dollars over those years participating in activities that promoted and benefited the conservation movement. You would be hard pressed to find anyone that cares more, or has more respect for, the outdoors and wildlife than I. However, I do care more about my wife and 5 children than I do about a banded water snake that decided to take up residence 6 inches from my back doorway.

I am glad you weren't offended and if you ever make it to NOLA I will buy you a beer. I was kidding about the veterinarian thing. I am going in a different direction but I do love animals my mother was a nurse and she brought home all sorts of injured animals. I can't tell you how many turtles I duct taped together and fed hamburger meat. Instead of my normal pessimistic approach to individuals I should remember we are on a gun forum so no one can be that bad. The funny thing is that I get real angry at people in this forum but in real life my biggest problem is laughing at the most inappropriate times. I will try to head your advice and think twice and post once. It is difficult though really freaking difficult.

Ain't that the truth. The funniest part is, you can go into just about 99% of bars on a Saturday night and pick the biggest, meanest looking bastard in there and instantly turn him into a whimpering little girl if you threw a snake at his feet. Remember, these are guys that claim they will rip your head off and **** down your neck...but hey're girly-girls when it comes to snakes.

Here's one of the bigger Cottonmouths I've caught (yes caught...not killed) in recent years:

And the release (again...no, I didn't kill him).

    that as well.

I am amazed at some of the perceptions that otherwise reasonable and intelligent {hopefully a fair and just assessment} individuals come up with when it comes to snakes.

Yeah, I didn't actually catch it...here's the true story in all it's horror. Put the kids to bed, as this story is not for the squeamish. :D

What really happened was I walked outside with my headlamp on, and I heard this hissing noise so loud it hurt my ears. I looked over and after seeing it was the legendary feared Cottonmouth, I immediately knew my life was in danger as 1/2 second later and it flew directly at my head with it's huge mouth open showing 4" fangs as large as pencils. I want tactical on it and grabbed it by the head in mid-air...then a struggle ensued. After performing a rear-naked choke on the demonspawn, it lost consciousness for about 5 seconds...giving me just enough time to slip the rope you see in the pictures over it's head and tame the vile beast. :chuckles:

And after all that you still didnt kill it. Shame on you LOL

Yeah, well...since only a handful of people in the world have actually survived a vicious Cottonmouth attack, much less subdued one...he knew he had been defeated and left without causing anymore trouble.

I know he's still out there though...watching...and waiting... :mamoru:
