My dislike of Taurus is no secret. Honestly, if someone GAVE me a new Taurus, I would not keep it . One only need look at many guns on the store shelves. The quality on many of them is horrendous. One only also need look on the various forums. A high percentage of them have problems straight out of the box, or on the first range trip.

If you want a nice gun - I'd look a little higher up in the gun food chain... You'll be happier, and you DO get what you pay for...

I realize that human nature is to complain instead of praise... But, the % of complaints (on all the various gun forums) about Taurus against other brands of guns doesn't even compare. And the stories of dealing with their customer service are maddening. Sometimes they send guns back MULTIPLE times without doing ANYTHING. I've seen some threads go for 18 months, where a person goes thru the Taurus "experience" in getting their gun fixed. It's just ridiculous...

I didn't start saving Taurus threads until a few months ago - so, unfortunately, I don't have some of the more depressing stories I have read. But here are a few:

Sorry -- just had to post that before the Taurus owners attempt to attack your unassailable logic.

I accept your point that they're quality is low both from an assembly and materials used viewpoint. I don't own a Taurus. I won't buy one. I'll encourage others not too buy them when asked my opinion.

Now can this thread please just die a noble death?

I have had a few taurus products. Dad and i bought a pair of autos about 10yrs ago. He got a 45 single stack smith 3rd gen clone (745 maybe?) and I got a pt92. Both stainless guns, finish was nice, and they functioned fine out of the box. I think I shot the 9mm more than he shot the 45. I could not hit a smalish target at 5yds with this gun with any regularity. I was young, and just chalked it up to being a bad shot. Well, I then got a high power clone (argentine military) cause it was cheap and recommended by a retired lt colonel. I took it out shooting and somehow managed to hi everything I aimed at. I have shot dad's 45 and it is not as accurate as the xd45 and 1911 I have.

So I have to conclude that those 2 guns are not machined very well, or I have trouble shooting them well. I do admit to not shooting the berretta 92 platform very well, but I can shoot just about anything else handgun related pretty good. Even large cumbersome things like desert eagles, and big ole reveolvers.

I also had a pt111, never shot it, but the polymer frame was so poorly finished inside that I had to take an exacto knfe and scrape the excess cuttings out so that the trigger would reset every time. This was just during dry fire sessions.

Well, working behind a gun counter that has a lot of Taurus firearms inside of it, I have handled many. I have also heard many people's opinions on them. Just like the responses in this forum, I find that people either love them or hate them. I am not too fond of them, but I have also never really shot many. My biggest gripe with them is that Taurus ships a lot of their firearms with so much freaking THICK grease. This is not your typical factory lube job. This is ridiculous gobs of thick goop that gunks up the action. The last one I took apart actually had a nice sized glob of goop right on the feed ramp and into the barrel. A lot of people who have issues with new Taurus handguns is due to the fact that they don't even think to disassemble the firearm and clean it before shooting.

    Great Comment

I had mine COMPLETLY cleaned and lubed properly and have not had one issue!
    And heck used the excess grease on my boat trailer bearings:}
    A win/win saturation!!!

I am endlessly fascinated by these threads and the people who post therein.

There is usually one person who is innocently and unabashedly seeking advice. He is pursuing no agenda, has few if any preconceived notions, and turns to gun forums hoping to elicit information and/or advice. I admire the folks in this group.

Respondents in these threads often include a few SME's (Subject Matter Experts). They have extensive training, and a wealth of pertinent and valid experience, that qualify them to render opinions in response to the OP's query. I respect and admire the folks in this group.

Another group is populated by members who simply wish to pad their post counts. They are identifiable by responses that typically include "+1" and/or several emoticons. I sometimes think these folks may need another hobby, but I consider them to be harmless.

The most entertaining posters, however, are the self-anointed gurus (SAG) who happen to have owned (or seen in a magazine) the firearm in question. They usually state, with some level of pride, the inconsequential number of rounds that they have personally fired though the weapon that is being discussed. None of them has ever taken a training class (other than perhaps a CCW course), nor have any of them ever participated in handgun competitions.

A SAG will often have a high post count, which he proudly considers to be an indicator of expertise (rather than loquaciousness) And despite his acknowledged lack of applicable experience, a SAG is ever-willing to (a) state unequivocally that the firearm under discussion is ultra-reliable because he (or his neighbor's hairdresser) has owned one for "years" and has "never had a problem," or (b) proffer a suggested alternative with which he has experience (such as a Hi-Point or a Kel-Tec).

SAG's are often identifiable by their recitation, usually in their sig line, of the guns and (matching Fobus) holsters they own. They do little actual harm, unless they manage to convince the OP (and others who read the thread) to follow the their advice. Without getting all theological, I would suggest that such a scenario calls to mind Matthew 15:14

In closing, I will confess to membership in the final group -- EAC's (Easily Amused Curmudgeons).

    That was funny.
