I have an aimpoint 3x magnifier on a larue lt649 behind the 553 now.

I have a mk8 cqbss on the way for one of those rifles.

I had an EOTech 516 and just upgraded to the EOTech MPO III, an EXPS 2-2 with a G23 3x magnifier. My only gripe is the short eye relief on the magnifier. Other than that, I love it.

Okay, that makes sense. It was a genuine question to satisfy my curiosity, not an attempt to prick you. Sorry to have annoyed you.

    .

Nah man, I'm not annoyed. Just answering your question. Didn't mean to come off as annoying. I am trying to learn something new, and also my wife shoots left handed, so it a way for her to use one of my rifles with ease.

Additionally, that rifle is no longer configured with an M3X anymore so really I've got nothing to say

For the longest time (since the mid-70's) I used Redfield 3-9 Widefield on a handle mount, usually on 4x or less. Still have that scope but have been experimenting with others. Everyone's opinion will vary and will depend on your needs. I've pretty well settled on the ACOG 4x as my favorite, with the Cmore next (non-magnified red dot).

I've used all kinds of red dots, served with ACOGs, tested many 1-4x, 1-6x, and even 1-8x. This optic gives me hits out to 800 yrds and farther. Redefined what an M4 could really do. Amazing optic.

Do you have pictures of the scope and reticle? Also, how is the illumination?

I went to Ft. Campbell to spend some time with my brother who's PCSing to Germany soon. I'm a former STA PLT. member from 1st Bn. 3rd Marines. I served quit some time in the Anbar Province, Iraq (Fallujah, Ramadi, Hit). I was looking forward to trying this optic out on the UKD Range ( unknown distance ). Sat. and Sun. (5/11,5/12/2012) and was met with full value wind from 3 to 9 with light, intermintent rain, with dark overcast cloud cover.
The 1-6x was used on my personal Stag Model 8 Plus Package (16' bbl. 1/7 twist) and a standard M4 (14.5' bbl 1/7). Ammunition was a mix of 75gr Hornady Steel Match(BTHP) and M855.
I worked out a quick 25 m zero then began to shoot. 200 boom, ding, "Hit".
300 same thing. Then I said what the hell let's see what this thing can really do.
I began quickly engaging all targets hitting just about every time.
The farthest target was a standard silouhuote at 800 yrds (760 meters?)! I put 150 rnds on the 650 700 and 800 with a 90% hit rate lol!
By this time quite a little crowd had gathered around me and so I let a 14 yr old kid have a go. He only spoke broken English and his father stated he had never fired a rifle before. This kid was hitting the 700 and 800 targets like he was a freaking sniper lol! This optic is great close range but AWESOME out at ranges with an M4 I could only dream about using an ACOG in the USMC. That first day I had no idea what the ranges where except for what the reticle using the "10 in." method told me! I'm not here to sell Sham Wows. I am just stating the facts. I'm currently still here at Ft. Campbell but when I get home I'll post some pics and try to post video of this amazing optic. Ed Verdugo, the designer, got it right on the money when he conceptualized what a soldier needs to make him as good as his weapon. Rob Rogers USMC Ret. Edit: btw if Justin has to go back to Astan, he's getting this scope.

I have a EOTech 512 with GG&G qd throw lever and flip covers paired with a cheapo UTG magnifier that i got for free. Im going to purchase a Vortex VMX3 magnifier and mount soon to replace the current.

I've been collecting and building AR's since about 1982 and have only recently added optics to one. I've made those old iron sights work for me all this time and have enjoyed them all for what they were intended for, which is a light carbine, easy to carry, tough and handy. Now before half the forum gets on a soapbox, I will say that the rifle has come a long way from the old pre ban colts that adorn my cabinet. I'd say it's the most movie star rifle on the planet. Everybody wants to endorse it and add another caliber, which I think is friggin awesome. I've never seen a rifle that can play so many roles and have so many names and faces. So, to keep up with the jones's I decided to finally build a flat top and scope one. I mounted a NC star 2-7x32 with lighted P4 sniper reticle, BDC dial cal'd for 55gr 5.56 and quick release mount that works just fine and holds zero without issues. I took a lot of flack about it but it only cost me 100 bucks. And I enjoy shooting it. And if it won't hit the target past any distance, I'll pick up a rifle that will.

For those of you using the variable power optics instead of an RDS, do you find the rifle feels noticeably "bulkier" with the added weight, or is it very minimal in actual practice?

To me, personally, the weight difference is not really all that noticeable. It really isnt all that much anyway.

    8oz.

    16oz.

I have yet to see a mount for a variable that is QD and under about 7oz, that is where the rest of the weight comes from. Still, you say it's not noticeable. Now I just need to find the right variable.
