Yep. Ladybug larvae and lacewing larvae are voracious aphid munchers. I seem to always have ladybugs around my yard so never have problems with aphids on my peppers and other veggies.
Didn't get close enough to see the pupils. Head did seem diamond shaped, but I only saw it front on so was hard to tell. Did also seem to have a much smaller tail than the usual water snakes I see in the ditch.
