VG, Thanks for the info/advice. I've always been against an AR for HD. Now I'm rethinking my 1st choices of handgun and shotgun.

Is there ever a time you would pick a shotgun for HD?

If I didn't own a rifle and only had a shotgun I would prefer it to a pistol. If I only had .30 caliber rifles, bolt action rifles, or rim fire rifles I would choose a shotgun. I would never choose a shotgun over an AR for Home Defense.

I don't think .458 is necessary. I would be worried about over penetration with those heavy projectiles. Im also not sold on the reliability. .223/5.56 is plenty lethal. Put the bullets where they need to go and it's as deadly as .308/20mm/Death Ray.

Ok thanks.I thought that was why the 458 was invented ,was to be used in the military and LE to clear homes w/o over penetration. That is why I asked. Also I agree with the reliability.I would be curious if anyone has used a 40rd ar mag for the 458 rounds and what grain bullet would feed better than others.I guess I'm the kind of person,as far as home defense goes, would rather over compensate than under assume.

I think that's what the marketting staff at whomever brought .458 to life want you to believe, hence the meaningless SOCOM Moniker. I am unaware of any mainstream use by Mil or LE. The guys who do CQB for a living and pretty much only CQB are doing it with 5.56mm AR Rifles.

Come on, you can't 'rack the slide' on the AR. That will scare anyone away.

OK, joking aside, interesting thread, rethinking the HD weapon. Been a big fan of the 00 Buck Flite Control. But, 30 round mags in a semi auto platform, does sound a bit more better.

I am also curious about the 300BLK round for home defense. Isn' that round designed around short barrel, suppressed, CQB. Also, how do you go about keeping an AR accessible in a home defense situation, but also keep it safe from kids or guests. My home defense weapon is a 9mm pistol simply because it stays in the drawer out of sight. Everything else stays locked up in the safe in another room.

I think .300BO is a great option. I just stick with 5.56 because of commonality, proven effectiveness , and to simplify my supply chain.

I keep the AR unloaded next to the bed. In the biometric safe on my night stand I keep a light, a Glock, and an AR Mag. That's my solution.

I was under the impression a subsonic 300blk shoots pretty much like a .45 (220gr bullet going 900-1000 FPS), and I would imagine a 110-150 gr going super sonic would penetrate more than a 5.56 would....

I have quite a few options, and I would love for someone to do a definitive test on best platform, round, load would be best for HD overall.

For right now my HD gun is either a 9mm or 45 cal pistol. I also have a few shotguns and rifles that I can use but would like to know more about the penetration through dry wall etc of 5.56, 300blk, 00 buck, other shotgun loads.

The Hornaday Models are nice. Interstate in Hammond has a pretty wide selection of models.

I was going to ask what type of safe do you keep it secure in for quick access yet safe with kids in the house.

Also I have an ak that has the same length barrel as your current set up I also have a 16 in carbine 6920 I know you might be more prone to like the AR but would the AK bring the same thing to the table in a slightly different package with not too much over penetration?

I wouldn't recommend anyone use the .300BO Subs for trying to kill people. They aren't particularly effective. I was talking about then 110-125gr supersonic options. The data exist. I will cobble together some interior walls in the near future and do some ad hoc testing.

Not really because of the charecteristics of the commonly used and available 7.62 and 5.45 rounds. They are optimized for intermediate barrier penetration.

Nate, purely academic question... if all you had was a .308 (fal, m1a, etc) is there a particular load you would choose for indoor use?

No idea. .308 stuff is big and fast and the reason it's so popular in belt Feds is its ability to turn cover into concealment.
